Liposuction removes stubborn fat in a single session, but the result you see at month three is shaped by what you do in the first six weeks. Patients always ask the same questions before surgery: How long does liposuction recovery really take, when can I shower, and when can I fly home? This guide answers all of them, week by week, using the protocol I follow in my own practice in Istanbul with drains, massage, compression, and travel included.

Day 0-1: Hospital

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. For liposuction you stay one night in hospital; if it is combined with a tummy tuck or multiple lifts, you stay two nights. You wake up already wearing your compression garment, and walking is encouraged from the first evening. Short, frequent walks are the single best thing you can do for your circulation and comfort in the early days. You also receive anticoagulant medication.

Expect tightness and bruising. Even though you have drains, a small amount of fluid leaking from the drain exit points in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal and settles quickly.

Days 1-3: Drains and the first massage

Small drains are placed during surgery to remove excess fluid and they come out gradually, not all at once, based on how much fluid each one collects over 24 hours. Drains are usually out around day 3 but they might stay longer if they collect more. Removal is generally painless and done in Istanbul: You never fly home with drains in.

Lymphatic massage starts on day 1. In my practice, 2 to 3 massage sessions are included in the package while you are in Istanbul, ideally every other day. For 360 liposuction and thigh liposuction, massage is not optional; it is a core part of getting a smooth, even result. We strongly recommend continuing the massages after you arrive home.

Day 5-6: Flying home

Most of my international liposuction patients fly home on day 5 or 6, once the drains are out and the final check-up is done. A 7-day stay in Istanbul comfortably covers even large combined cases. I do your final dressing personally before you leave, and you travel with spare dressing materials and direct access to my team from home.

On the flight, get up and walk the aisle regularly, keep your water intake high, and wear your compression garment. In combined cases, blood-thinning prophylaxis such as Clexane is used where I consider it indicated.

Showering and washing

While the drains are in and the drain openings are still closing, do not shower. Wash the rest of your body normally and clean the treated areas with wet wipes or a towel dipped in warm, soapy water. A full shower is allowed 5 to 7 days after the drains have been removed, once the drain openings have fully closed. Make sure that somebody is at home while you take a shower and water is not too hot; you might faint or get a scald, so be careful.

Weeks 2-6: Compression and massage at home

Your compression garment does the quiet work of recovery: It controls swelling and helps the skin settle evenly. The rules in my practice are simple. If the garment overwhelms you, you may take it off for 1 to 2 hours a day, and you may hand-wash it and stay without it until it dries. From day 21, daytime wear becomes optional – wear it as much as you can – but overnight wear remains mandatory, because your body cannot be monitored while you sleep. Plan for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks in total; if healing is going well, you may stop after week 6 but ask before you do.

Continue lymphatic or manual hand massage after you return home, 2 to 3 sessions per week depending on availability. If massage centres near you are expensive, a simple handheld massage device sold online works well for self-massage.

Desk work is realistic within about a week for standard cases; standing or physical jobs need longer. Driving is allowed once you are off strong pain medication, for most patients around 1 to 2 weeks. Light cardio such as walking and gentle cycling resumes from weeks 3 to 4. Bath, pool and sea wait until the incision points have completely healed, typically 4 to 6 weeks.

Week 6 and beyond: The real result

At six weeks, most patients return to full training, building up progressively rather than jumping straight to pre-surgery loads. Swelling is the last guest to leave: The bulk settles by month 3, and the final contour is visible at 3 to 6 months. Firm or uneven-feeling areas under the skin during the first weeks are normal and soften with time and massage.

What about BBL recovery?

A Brazilian Butt Lift is essentially liposuction plus fat grafting, so BBL recovery follows almost exactly the timeline on this page: The same drains, the same massage schedule, the same compression rules. The one real difference is sitting. After a BBL you may lie on your back or front freely, but use a BBL cushion whenever you sit for long periods, including on your flight home, and walk as much as possible instead of sitting.

How long is liposuction recovery time?

As a practical summary from my own protocol: One night in hospital, drains out around day 3, flying home day 5 or 6, first full shower 5 to 7 days after the drains are out, desk work within about a week, light cardio at weeks 3 to 4, full gym at week 6, and the final contour at 3 to 6 months.

When are the drains removed after liposuction?

On average around day 3 but the real answer is: When your 24-hour fluid output says so. Removal is staged, depends partly on the volume removed, and is always completed in Istanbul before you travel.

When can I shower after liposuction?

A full shower is allowed 5 to 7 days after the drains have been removed, once the drain openings have fully closed. Until then, wash non-treated areas normally and clean the treated areas with wet wipes or warm, soapy water on a towel.

How long do I wear the compression garment?

A minimum of 6 to 8 weeks. From third week, day 21, daytime wear becomes optional, but overnight wear stays mandatory. If it overwhelms you, removing it for 1 to 2 hours a day is fine, and you may hand-wash it and wait until it dries.

Is massage really necessary after liposuction?

Yes. In my protocol, 2 to 3 lymphatic massage sessions in Istanbul are built into the package, and I ask patients to continue 2 to 3 sessions per week at home. For 360 and thigh liposuction it directly affects how smooth the final result is. A handheld massage device is a good low-cost alternative for self-massage.

What if liposuction is combined with other procedures?

Combined surgery, liposuction with a tummy tuck, an arm lift or a breast procedure in one session, means longer operating time and a heavier recovery, and larger cases stay a night longer under observation. If a tummy tuck is part of your plan, the tummy tuck recovery timeline covers that side of the story in detail. You can read how the procedure itself works on the liposuction in Turkey page.

    Good to know

Recovery does not end when you fly home

How well you look after yourself after you leave matters as much as the surgery itself. Most of the problems we see are preventable ones - massage that was skipped, compression given up too early. Your part of the plan continues at home.

      Keep up your massage

Especially after liposuction. The sessions in Istanbul are only the start; continuing two to three times a week at home lowers the risk of fluid build-up and firmness. A simple handheld device works if a clinic is too costly.

      Take your compression seriously

Overnight above all, for at least six to eight weeks. The comfort of leaving it off is never worth a result that is harder to undo. With implants, support matters until healing settles.

If something feels wrong, tell us

If your recovery is not going the way you expected, reach out early rather than waiting. A small issue caught in time is easily managed; left alone, it grows. We would always rather hear from you.

When to seek help straight away

Recovery has its ups and downs, and some swelling, bruising and discomfort are all normal. But a few signs need urgent attention. If any of these happen - especially in the first weeks, when you may still be travelling - do not wait:

      • Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain
      • Pain, swelling, warmth or redness in one calf or leg
      • A fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell
      • Fast-increasing pain, swelling or bruising
      • Heavy or bright-red bleeding, or fluid soaking through dressings
      • A wound that opens, or looks red, hot and increasingly sore

Sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency - call your local emergency number first, then tell us. For anything else on this list, contact us straight away; we would always rather hear from you early.

      Talk it through on WhatsApp

Every recovery is different - your technique, your health, your travel dates, and whether you are combining procedures. Send us your plan on WhatsApp and Dr. Aydinol's team will go through your timeline with you.

Please tick the consent box so we can open WhatsApp.

These timings reflect how we plan a straightforward recovery and are guidance rather than a promise; your own plan is confirmed with you in person, and your travel date at your final check-up before you leave. If anything about your recovery ever feels wrong, contact us first - that is what the direct line is for.
