An arm lift is the operation where the decision is made before the surgery, and it is a decision about a scar. Loose skin on the upper arm cannot be tightened without removing it, and removing it leaves a line down the inner arm. Every honest conversation about brachioplasty starts there, because patients who accept the scar are almost always happy with the result and patients who were not told about it properly are almost always not. This page explains when the scar is worth it, when it can be avoided, and what recovery genuinely involves.
The Scar Is the Whole Decision
The incision runs along the inner side of the upper arm, from the armpit toward the elbow, placed where the arm is least visible when it hangs at your side. It is a long scar, it is permanent, and in the first months it is red.
It matures over twelve to eighteen months into a paler line. It is not invisible, and I do not describe it as such. What patients trade for it is arms that no longer swing when they move, sleeves that fit, and the ability to wear short sleeves at all, which for many people after significant weight loss is the entire point.
The scar heals better on the inner arm than many people fear, but this is the operation on my site with the highest ratio of scar to result, and you should decide about it with that in front of you.

Liposuction, Short Scar, or Full Brachioplasty
Three different arms need three different operations, and the difference is skin quality rather than arm size.
- Liposuction alone. Suitable when the problem is fat and the skin still retracts. Common in younger patients who have not lost large amounts of weight. No long scar, only small ports.
- Short scar brachioplasty. Suitable when the laxity is limited to the upper third of the arm near the armpit. The excision is hidden largely within the armpit crease. The candidates for this are fewer than patients hope.
- Full brachioplasty. Necessary when laxity runs the length of the upper arm, which is the usual picture after major weight loss. This is the operation with the long inner arm scar, and it is the only one that addresses that pattern.
I assess this by pinching the skin with the arm raised and watching what it does when released. Skin that snaps back is a liposuction problem. Skin that stays where you put it is an excision problem, and no energy device, garment or injection changes that.
Liposuction is frequently combined with excision in the same operation, treating the fat and the skin together.
Who Is a Good Candidate
The typical patient has lost a significant amount of weight, has been at a stable weight for at least four to six months, and has loose skin on the upper arms that no amount of training has changed. Ageing skin without weight loss is the other common picture.
The honest exclusions. If your weight is still moving, wait, because the skin will loosen again and the operation will need repeating. If you are not prepared to live with the scar, do not have the operation, and I would rather you decide that in consultation than afterwards. If you have lymphoedema or have had lymph nodes removed from the armpit, the arm needs specific assessment before anything is planned. And if you smoke, wound healing along a long inner arm incision is exactly where it goes wrong; read my guide to smoking and surgery before booking.
Patients considering an arm lift after major weight loss are usually thinking about more than the arms. My page on surgery for loose skin after weight loss covers how these operations are sequenced.
The Operation
A full brachioplasty takes roughly two to three hours for both arms under general anaesthesia. Liposuction is performed first where fat is part of the problem, the excess skin is then marked with the arm in position and removed, and the closure is done in layers so that the deep tissue carries the tension rather than the skin.
Drains are sometimes used depending on how much tissue was removed. You spend one night in hospital.
Your Week in Istanbul
- Day 0: surgery and one night in hospital.
- Days 1 to 5: at your hotel. Compression sleeves on, arms elevated when resting, no lifting. Swelling and bruising peak around day three. Drains, if used, come out in this window.
- Day 6 to 7: wound check, dressings changed, and you fly home. Plan seven days in Istanbul.
Compression sleeves are worn for about six weeks. Desk work is realistic at two weeks. Lifting anything heavy, pushing up out of a chair with your arms and gym work on the upper body wait six weeks, because tension across a fresh inner arm closure is what widens the scar.
The arms look swollen and the scar looks angry for the first weeks. The shape is clear at about three months and the scar is still improving at a year.
If you want a day by day plan built around your own surgery date, the recovery planner will make one.
Risks and Honest Limits
This is a procedure with a high rate of minor problems and a low rate of serious ones, and you should see the published numbers rather than a reassurance. A meta-analysis pooling around 1,600 patients found problem scarring in roughly ten percent, recurrent looseness in about eight percent, wound edge separation in about seven percent, seroma in about six percent, infection in under four percent, and nerve-related problems, lymphatic problems, delayed healing and haematoma each in the range of two to three percent. Around seven in a hundred patients had a further operation to improve the appearance.
Read that as it is meant: dressing changes for a small wound separation, or a scar revision, are common enough that you should plan for the possibility rather than be surprised by it. Serious complications are uncommon.
Two findings from the same analysis shaped how I do this operation. Adding liposuction to the excision reduced the rate of several complications, which is why I combine them rather than treating them as alternatives. And the exact placement of the incision affects the complication rate, so where the scar sits is a surgical judgement about healing as well as about visibility.
The limits worth stating. The operation removes skin; it does not build muscle tone, and an arm that has lost muscle will look better but not athletic. Scar position can be planned but scar quality is largely decided by your own healing. And if you gain weight afterwards, the arm changes with the rest of you.
Cost of an Arm Lift in Turkey
An arm lift in Istanbul costs considerably less than the same operation in the United Kingdom, Germany or the wider EU, and the difference comes from local operating costs rather than the technique. The figure depends on whether the operation is liposuction alone, a short scar procedure or a full brachioplasty, whether both arms are treated, and the operating and hospital time involved. I quote in writing after seeing photographs, and the quotation covers hospital, anaesthesia and follow-up in Istanbul.
Send your photographs for an assessment. Both arms raised to shoulder height, front and back, plus your current weight and how long it has been stable, are enough for me to tell you whether you need liposuction, a short scar procedure or a full arm lift. Message on WhatsApp
Frequently Asked Questions
How bad is the arm lift scar?
It runs along the inner upper arm, is permanent, and is red for the first months before fading to a paler line over twelve to eighteen months. Published series report problem scarring in around ten percent of patients, and scar revision within the first year is the commonest reason for a second operation. It is the main trade of the operation and should be the main thing you decide about.
Can I have an arm lift without a scar?
Only if your problem is fat rather than loose skin, in which case liposuction alone will work. If the skin does not retract when you release it, no scarless option produces a real change.
How long do I stay in Turkey for an arm lift?
Seven days: one night in hospital, recovery at your hotel in compression sleeves, and a wound check before flying.
When can I lift things again?
Light daily activity within days, desk work at about two weeks, and heavy lifting or upper body gym work at six weeks. Early tension across the closure is what widens the scar.
Should I wait until I have finished losing weight?
Yes. Stable weight for at least four to six months before surgery, otherwise the skin loosens again and the operation is repeated.
Can an arm lift be combined with other operations?
It is often combined with other body contouring after major weight loss, though how much is done in one session depends on operating time and your general health rather than convenience.
Will my arms be numb afterwards?
Numbness on the inner arm is common early and usually settles over months. A small patch of lasting altered sensation is possible.
