Breast Reduction in Turkey: Techniques, Recovery & Cost

A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and skin to bring the breast to a size that fits the body, and repositions the nipple so the reshaped breast sits where it should. It is one of the few aesthetic operations that is also a functional one: for many patients the goal is not a smaller cup size for its own sake but an end to neck and back pain, shoulder grooves from bra straps, rashes under the breast, and the daily limits a heavy chest places on exercise and clothing. It is also among the operations with the highest patient satisfaction in plastic surgery, and I understand why.

Breast reduction is a core part of my breast practice. This page explains who it helps, the techniques I use and how I decide between them, what happens in theatre and during the week in Istanbul, and what a breast reduction in Turkey involves in practical terms.

Who Is a Breast Reduction For?

Most of my reduction patients come for one or more of the following reasons.

Physical symptoms. Chronic neck, shoulder and upper back pain, deep grooves where bra straps sit, numbness in the little fingers from strap pressure, recurrent skin irritation or infection in the fold under the breast, and headaches from posture. These are the classic indications, and they improve reliably after surgery.

Limits on daily life. Running and high-impact sport being uncomfortable or impossible, clothes that never fit both the chest and the waist, and self-consciousness about proportions that started in the teenage years.

Asymmetry. A difference of a cup size or more between the two breasts, which a reduction on one side or both can correct.

After weight loss. The breast has lost volume but the skin and some tissue remain heavy and low. Here the operation is as much a lift as a reduction, and the technique choice reflects that.

If your breasts are a comfortable size but have simply dropped, you need a breast lift, not a reduction. If your concern is mostly fat in the outer breast and armpit area with good skin, liposuction alone may be enough. I will tell you which applies.

Breast Reduction Techniques: How I Choose

Two decisions define the operation: the skin incision pattern, which decides the scars, and the pedicle, the bridge of tissue that keeps the nipple alive and connected while it is moved. Patients ask about the first and rarely hear about the second, yet the pedicle is what protects sensation and the possibility of breastfeeding.

Vertical (Short-Scar) Reduction

An incision around the areola and a vertical line down to the fold, with no horizontal scar. It suits small to moderate reductions in patients with reasonable skin quality. The breast is shaped from the inside with sutures rather than relying on the skin to hold it, which gives a more projected, longer-lasting shape. The lower part of the vertical scar can pucker in the early months and settles by six to twelve months.

Inverted-T (Anchor) Reduction

The vertical pattern plus a horizontal incision in the fold. It is the technique for large reductions, very loose skin, and most post-weight-loss cases, because only this pattern removes skin in both directions. The scar in the fold is hidden by the breast itself when standing. When a large amount of tissue has to come away, I do not compromise on this pattern to save a scar; the result would not hold.

Pedicle Choice

For most reductions I use a superomedial pedicle, which keeps the nipple attached to tissue from the upper inner breast. It preserves upper pole fullness, reaches well when the nipple has to move a long way, and has a reliable blood supply. An inferior pedicle is an alternative in very large breasts. In extreme cases, where the nipple would have to travel too far for any pedicle to be safe, the nipple is removed and replaced as a free graft; this is rare, and it means sensation and breastfeeding are lost. I tell patients in advance when this is a possibility.

Liposuction as Part of the Reduction

I use liposuction to refine the outer breast and the area toward the armpit in most reductions, and rarely as the sole method in patients with fatty breasts, good skin and a nipple already in the right position. Liposuction alone does not lift and does not remove skin.

The Operation

A breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and takes three to four hours, depending on the amount removed and on any liposuction. The tissue to be removed is marked with you standing before surgery, because the breast changes shape completely when you lie down. The nipple is moved on its pedicle, the excess tissue is removed and weighed, the breast is shaped internally and supported with sutures, and the skin is closed in layers with absorbable stitches. Drains are placed and usually come out on day two or three, before you fly home. The removed tissue is sent for routine pathology, as it should be in every reduction.

Your Week in Istanbul

For international patients the practical timeline is consistent, and it is worth knowing before you book flights.

  • Day 0 to 1: one night in hospital. Pain is moderate and controlled with standard medication; most patients walk the same evening.
  • Day 1 to 5: at your hotel, in a surgical bra, with check-ups. Drains out on day two or three.
  • Day 5 to 7: final check and dressing change, then most patients fly home. The full stay in Istanbul is five to seven days.
  • After you are home: desk work from around day ten, driving from around day twelve, sports bra day and night for six weeks, light cardio from around week four, gym and running from week six, and scar maturation over twelve to eighteen months. Relief from neck and shoulder pain is usually noticed within the first weeks.

The recovery planner will build a personal calendar around your surgery date.

Combined Procedures

A reduction is often combined with a tummy tuck or liposuction as part of a mommy makeover or a post-weight-loss plan. Because a reduction is already a three to four hour operation, combining it with a large body procedure has to be weighed against total anaesthesia time and your health, and I will recommend two stages when that is the safer route.

Risks and Honest Limits

The complications that matter after a breast reduction are delayed wound healing where the scars meet under the breast, seroma or haematoma, infection, reduced nipple sensation, asymmetry, and, rarely, partial loss of the nipple or areola. Two things reduce all of them substantially: not smoking, and a body mass index in a range where healing is predictable. If you smoke, read my honest guide to smoking and surgery before you book.

There are limits I want you to know before you decide. Scars are permanent; they fade over one to two years but do not disappear, and the anchor pattern leaves more of them. Nipple sensation is usually preserved with a pedicle technique but can be reduced or, in a minority, lost. Breastfeeding after a reduction is possible for many women but cannot be promised. Cup size is not a precise unit and I do not guarantee one; I remove the amount your frame needs and the tissue allows. Significant weight gain, pregnancy or hormonal change can enlarge the breast again. Occasionally a small revision of a scar or of asymmetry is needed after a year. These are not reasons to avoid the operation, which has one of the highest satisfaction rates in my practice; they are reasons to have it with realistic expectations.

Is a Breast Reduction in Turkey Safe?

It is as safe as the surgeon and the hospital you choose, which is true in every country. What is different in Turkey is the range: excellent surgeons working in accredited hospitals, and price-led operators who should be avoided. I have written a full guide on how to judge safety when choosing a clinic in Turkey. In short: an identifiable surgeon, an ISAPS or national society membership you can verify, a hospital rather than a clinic for an operation of this length, and a team that stays in contact after you fly home.

Cost of a Breast Reduction in Turkey

Prices in Turkey are substantially lower than in the United Kingdom, Germany or the wider EU for the same operation, and the reason is local operating costs, not a difference in what happens in theatre. What a breast reduction costs in my practice depends on the technique, the amount of tissue removed, whether liposuction or other procedures are combined, and the hospital stay involved. I do not publish a single price because a small vertical reduction and a large anchor reduction with a tummy tuck are not the same operation. I give a written quotation after reviewing your photographs and history, and it includes the hospital, anaesthesia, pathology, follow-up in Istanbul and post-operative contact.

Send your photographs for an assessment. Front and side views, standing relaxed with arms down, together with your height, weight and current bra size, are enough for me to tell you which technique you need and how much reduction is realistic. +90 544 772 0772 or info@mustafaaydinol.com

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a breast reduction in Turkey?

Considerably less than the same operation in the UK or EU. The exact figure depends on the technique and what is combined; I quote in writing after reviewing photographs.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a breast reduction?

Five to seven days: one night in hospital, then hotel with check-ups, drains out on day two or three, and flying home after a final check.

How many cup sizes can I go down?

Typically one to three, depending on your starting size and frame. I plan the reduction by proportion rather than by a promised cup size, because cup sizes vary between brands and the tissue itself sets the limit.

Will I have a scar in the fold under my breast?

For small to moderate reductions, no: the vertical technique leaves scars around the areola and down to the fold only. For large reductions and after weight loss, yes; the anchor pattern is the only one that removes enough skin.

Will I lose nipple sensation?

With a pedicle technique most patients keep sensation, sometimes reduced for a few months. A minority have permanent reduction. With a free nipple graft, used only in extreme cases, sensation is lost.

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Many women can, because the nipple stays connected to part of the duct system, but it cannot be guaranteed. If you are planning a pregnancy soon, it is usually better to wait.

Does breast reduction help back pain?

For patients whose pain is caused by breast weight, yes, and usually within weeks. It does not treat back pain from other causes, which is why I ask about your history in detail.

How long does the result last?

The reduction is permanent. The breast will still respond to large weight change, pregnancy and age, so a stable weight protects the result.
