Labiaplasty in Turkey: Wedge Labia Reduction, Recovery and Limits

Labiaplasty is an operation that reduces the inner lips of the vulva, the labia minora, when their size or shape causes discomfort or distress. Most of the women who write to me describe something practical before they mention appearance: chafing in leggings, pain on a bicycle saddle, tissue that twists in a swimsuit, irritation during sport, or difficulty keeping the area clean. Many have never discussed it with a doctor.

It is a small operation with a high satisfaction rate, but it is surgery on a sensitive part of the body, and it cannot be undone. This page explains what is normal, when surgery helps, how the trim and wedge techniques differ, which one I use, and what to expect if you plan labiaplasty in Turkey with me in Istanbul.

Labiaplasty, Labioplasty, Labia Reduction: What It Is and What It Is Not

Patients find this operation under many names, and in many languages: labioplastia in Spanish, labioplastyka in Polish, schaamlipcorrectie in Dutch, Schamlippenkorrektur in German, nymphoplastie in French. The terms you are most likely to meet are these:

  • Labiaplasty or labioplasty. The general name for surgery on the labia. In everyday use it almost always means reduction of the labia minora.
  • Labia minora reduction (nymphoplasty). Removal of part of the inner lips so that they no longer protrude beyond the outer lips, or protrude less.
  • Labial hypertrophy. The medical description of labia minora that are larger than average. It is a description, not a disease, and there is no single measurement that defines it.
  • Clitoral hood reduction. Removal of excess folds of skin beside or over the clitoral hood. It is sometimes needed with a labiaplasty so that the result looks balanced; the clitoris itself is not operated on.
  • Labia majora surgery. Surgery on the outer lips, which are a different structure: reduction when they are heavy, or fat transfer when they have lost volume.
  • Vaginoplasty. A different operation that tightens the vaginal canal after childbirth. It is not part of a labiaplasty.

Labiaplasty is not a treatment for a sexual problem in general, it does not change the vagina, and it is not a way to reach a “standard” appearance, because no standard exists. All of the genital procedures I perform are summarized on the genital aesthetics page; this page covers the labiaplasty itself in detail.

What Is Normal, and Why Women Seek Labiaplasty

The labia minora vary more than most people realize. A 2026 meta-analysis of measurements in 991 premenopausal women found an average width of around 18 millimeters, with wide and overlapping ranges. Labia that are visible beyond the outer lips are not unusual, and one side being longer than the other is not a defect.

Some surgeons use a width of 4 or 5 centimeters as a working definition of hypertrophy, but there is no agreed cut-off. For that reason I look at what bothers you, not only at a number.

The reasons women give fall into three groups, and most patients have more than one:

  • Functional. Chafing and irritation with tight clothing, pain or pinching during cycling, horse riding or running, tissue caught in underwear or a swimsuit, difficulty with hygiene during menstruation, and discomfort or tugging during intercourse.
  • Appearance. A visible bulge in fitted clothing or swimwear, marked asymmetry, or darker, irregular edges that the woman finds distressing.
  • Change over time. Childbirth, hormonal changes and weight change can stretch or alter the labia, so that a woman who was never aware of them becomes uncomfortable in her thirties or forties.

When Labiaplasty Helps and When It Does Not

Labiaplasty helps most when there is a clear link between the tissue and the problem: the labia protrude, rub or twist, and the complaint appears where you would expect it. In that case, removing the excess tissue usually resolves the discomfort.

Simple measures are worth trying first, and they are enough for some women: soft cotton or seamless underwear, avoiding harsh soaps and perfumed products, a barrier cream before sport, and a different saddle for cycling. No cream, laser or injection reduces the size of the labia minora; the vaginal laser treatments that are often advertised act on other tissues and do not replace a labiaplasty.

Surgery does not help when the pain has another cause. Pain during intercourse, burning or itching can come from skin conditions, infections, pelvic floor problems or vaginal dryness, and these need diagnosis and treatment by a gynecologist.

Body dysmorphic disorder is a recognized condition in which a person is preoccupied with a perceived flaw that others hardly notice. In one prospective study, 9 of 49 women who had a labiaplasty met the diagnostic criteria for it before the operation.

Trim or Wedge: The Techniques, Explained Plainly

Every labiaplasty removes tissue, but the techniques differ in where the tissue is taken from and where the scar lies.

  • Trim (edge resection). The excess is removed along the free edge of the labia, and the new edge is sutured. The natural edge, with its color and texture, is removed and replaced by a suture line.
  • Wedge (central wedge resection). A V-shaped section is removed from the widest part of the labia, and the upper and lower parts are joined. The natural edge, with its color and texture, is kept, and the scar runs across the labia rather than along the edge; because it lies along a natural line, it is usually well hidden. Wound separation along this suture line is the complication reported most often after a wedge resection.
  • De-epithelialization. Only the surface layer is removed on both sides and the labia are folded and sutured. It keeps all of the nerves and blood vessels, but it is suited only to modest reductions.

I perform labiaplasty with the wedge technique. If the darker edge is what bothers you most, we choose the technique together. The published evidence does not show that one technique is better for every woman: in a randomized trial of 48 women, those treated with a wedge and those treated with a trim had the same improvement in genital self-image after six months, with no difference in complications. Two large meta-analyses found satisfaction rates of 94 and 99 percent across all techniques. At the examination I explain how the wedge will be planned for your anatomy, how much tissue it will remove, and whether the clitoral hood also needs attention.

How I Perform Labiaplasty

I perform labiaplasty with the wedge technique, in an accredited hospital, under general anesthesia, with an anesthesiologist present. The operation takes about one to two hours, and it is a day case or one night in hospital, decided by your plan. When labiaplasty is part of a larger plan, it is performed in the same operation as the body surgery.

Before surgery, we assess together how much tissue will be removed, so that we agree on what will change. Excess folds of the clitoral hood are reduced in the same operation when they would otherwise look out of proportion after the labia are reduced. I close the wounds with fine, dissolving sutures, so there are no stitches to remove after you fly home.

A labiaplasty can be added to a body operation such as a tummy tuck, liposuction or a mommy makeover. Genital procedures do not count toward the limit that applies to every combined operation in my practice, which is no more than three major lifts in one session; I explain that limit in where I draw the line on multiple surgeries at once. The overall plan decides how long you stay; the combination planner gives a first estimate.

Your Week in Istanbul

For a labiaplasty on its own, plan to stay in Istanbul until the check on the fifth day after surgery; you fly home after that check. When it is combined with body surgery, the stay follows the larger operation, usually 5 to 7 days.

  • Day 0: surgery under general anesthesia, as a day case or one night in hospital, decided by your plan. You walk on the day of surgery.
  • Days 1 to 4: at your hotel, with cool packs, loose clothing and gentle rinsing after using the toilet. Swelling is at its peak around the second and third day. We stay in contact every day.
  • Day 5: check with me, after which you fly home with written aftercare instructions.

Recovery After Labiaplasty

The first week is the most uncomfortable. Swelling is normal and often uneven, so one side may look larger than the other for a while; this is not the final result. Most of the swelling settles in one to two weeks, and the remainder over the following weeks.

Light activity is possible after two to three days, and most women with a desk job return to work after about a week. Wear loose clothing and avoid pressure on the area. Cycling and sport wait for one month. Tampons and intercourse wait for about four to six weeks, until the wounds have fully healed.

The nerves are preserved, and sensation is usually unchanged. Temporary numbness or increased sensitivity along the scar can occur and settles over weeks to months. The final shape is judged at about three months, when the swelling has gone and the scar has softened.

Risks and Honest Limits

Complications after labiaplasty are uncommon and usually minor, but they exist, and I explain them before you decide:

  • Wound separation (dehiscence). The complication reported most often. After a wedge resection, the technique I use, the pooled rates in two meta-analyses were about 3 and 8 percent. A small separation usually heals on its own; a larger one may need a minor revision once the tissue has settled.
  • Bleeding and hematoma. A collection of blood under the skin causes painful swelling in the first days and occasionally needs drainage.
  • Infection. Uncommon, and usually treated with local care and antibiotics.
  • Asymmetry, scalloping or over-resection. Removing too little can be corrected later; removing too much cannot be fully restored. That is why I plan conservatively, and why I would rather leave a little tissue than take too much.
  • Change in sensation or discomfort during intercourse. Rare, and usually temporary, but possible.

Revisions are needed in a minority of cases, most often for wound separation or for the appearance of the edge. Revision surgery waits until the tissue has fully healed, usually six to twelve months after the first operation.

The honest limits are these. Labiaplasty reduces tissue; it cannot create a particular shape that the anatomy does not allow. Childbirth and aging can still change the area later. And the evidence on sexual function, while encouraging, is not strong: meta-analyses show improvement in sexual function scores, but most of the studies are uncontrolled and small. I tell patients this plainly rather than promising that surgery will improve their sex life.

Labiaplasty Cost in Turkey: What Shapes the Price and What Is Included

I do not publish a single price, because the figure depends on your plan:

  • The extent of surgery. Labia minora alone, or with clitoral hood reduction or labia majora surgery.
  • Labiaplasty alone or combined. When it is added to body surgery, it is quoted as part of one plan.
  • The hospital stay. For labiaplasty on its own, a day case or one night in hospital, decided by your plan; when it is combined with a larger operation, the stay follows that operation.

I give a written quotation once your plan is clear. Every quotation is all inclusive: the surgery, the hospital stay, the anesthesia, medication, your accommodation, airport and clinic transfers, and the follow-up visits and post-operative contact in Istanbul.

Before and After: How to Read the Photographs

Many of my patients do not want their photographs published, and I do not show genital results on the website. Results for other operations are in the before and after gallery.

If you look at labiaplasty photographs elsewhere, a good result looks natural and in proportion, not as small as possible. Check that the edges are smooth, the two sides are balanced, and the photograph was taken at three months or later, when the swelling has gone.

Ask for an assessment. Describe what bothers you (chafing, sport, clothing, hygiene, discomfort or appearance) and for how long, together with your age, height, weight, any pregnancies, and any other operation you are considering at the same time. I do not ask for photographs of the genital area. If you would like to send one, you may; it is reviewed privately and never published. Send your message on WhatsApp, +90 544 772 0772, or by email, info@mustafaaydinol.com, whichever you prefer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, trim or wedge labiaplasty?

The published evidence does not show that one is better for every woman: in a randomized trial both gave the same improvement in genital self-image, with no difference in complications. A trim replaces the natural edge with a suture line; a wedge keeps the natural edge. I perform labiaplasty with the wedge technique; if the darker edge is what bothers you most, we choose the technique together.

Will labiaplasty affect sensation or sexual function?

In most women sensation is unchanged, and studies report improved sexual function scores after surgery, although the evidence is of limited quality. Temporary numbness or sensitivity can occur. The plan is conservative, and the clitoris itself is not operated on.

Can I combine labiaplasty with a tummy tuck or a mommy makeover?

Yes. Labiaplasty can be performed in the same operation as body surgery and does not count toward the limit of three major lifts per session. Your stay in Istanbul then follows the larger operation.

Can I have children after a labiaplasty?

Yes. Labiaplasty does not affect fertility or pregnancy. A vaginal birth can stretch or tear the labia again, so some women prefer to wait until they have completed their family, but that is a personal choice, not a medical requirement.

When can I return to sport, sex and cycling?

Walking starts on the day of surgery and light activity after two to three days. Cycling and sport wait for one month. Tampons and intercourse wait for about four to six weeks, until the wounds have healed.

Is labiaplasty in Turkey safe?

The risks are the same in every country; what matters is who operates and where. Choose a plastic surgeon who performs labiaplasty regularly, an accredited hospital and a clear plan for follow-up after you fly home. My guide on how to judge whether plastic surgery in Turkey is safe explains what to check.
